Secret Service shoots man in overnight 'armed confrontation' near White House

Around midnight, agents of the Secret Service came upon the man's vehicle parked close to 17th and F Streets, NW, and found a person corresponding to his appearance in the area.
"As police closed in, the man waved a gun around and an armed standoff ensued with shots fired by our officers," the agency posted in a press release.
"The suspect was transported to a nearby hospital and the status of his condition is uncertain."

There were no reported injuries to Secret Service personnel.

The Metropolitan Police Department will conduct an investigation into the shooting because they are the lead agency tasked with use-of-force cases in the District of Columbia, according to the Secret Service.
President Donald Trump was not at the White House during the shooting, according to his schedule. The president is scheduled to depart from his Mar-a-Lago estate today at 5 p.m. to return to the capital.

The shooting took place about a block away from the White House.
