Trump reveals top terrorist behind Abbey Gate attack apprehended, facing 'swift sword of American justice'

President Donald Trump announced that the highest-ranking terror suspect for the 2021 Abbey Gate attack in Afghanistan that took the lives of 13 U.S. personnel has been captured.

"Tonight, I am happy to report that we have just apprehended the mastermind of that atrocity, the number one terrorist," Trump disclosed in his address to a joint Congress. "And he is currently on his way here to face the swift sword of American justice."

The suspect was identified as Muhammed Sharifullah, Fox News reported.

"And I want to thank, in particular, the Pakistani government for facilitating this monster's arrest," he stated. "This was a really historic day for those 13 families, who I really came to know extremely well."

The Biden administration's disastrous exit from Afghanistan resulted in the killing of 13 American service members — eleven Marines, one Navy corpsman and sailor — who were protecting the airport in Kabul, while hundreds of Americans and tens of thousands of Afghan allies were stranded behind in the country in Taliban-ruled Afghanistan. At least 170 Afghan civilians were wounded in the attack, based on the U.S. military's report on it.

Conservative opponents, like Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, attributed the pullback as inviting to their nemeses like Russia to seize Ukraine.

The Taliban proclaimed takeover of Afghanistan in the aftermath of the withdrawal.

"I talked to a lot of the parents and family members, and they're all in our hearts tonight," Trump stated. "I talked to them on the phone. We had a large call. All of them called. And everyone was on the line and they did nothing but cry with joy. They were very happy. As happy as you can be in those circumstances. Their child, brother, sister, son, daughter was murdered for no reason at all."

The loved ones of the families who lost their loved ones during the failed withdrawal previously and consistently criticized then-President Biden and then-Vice President Kamala Harris for their death, including initiating a fiery defense attack on Harris — while she was campaigning for president — following the 2024 withdrawal anniversary. Parents and other relatives accused the "administration killed my son" and that they "have not seen any support from you or your administration."

"What a terrible day," Trump went on to say. "Such incompetence was demonstrated that when Putin saw what took place, I guess he said, 'well, maybe this is my opportunity.' That's how bad it was. Should have never occurred."
