"Anora" dominated at the 2025 Oscars on Sunday evening, winning five awards, including best picture and best director, at the 97th Academy Awards.
Sean Baker, director, editor, writer and co-producer of "Anora," took home four Oscars on Sunday, equalling Walt Disney's record for the most Academy Awards received by an individual in a single year. Baker is unique in having won all four awards for the same film, whereas Disney received them for four different films at the 1954 ceremony. (Bong Joon-Ho took home four statues at the 2020 event, but technically the best international feature victory went to South Korea, not to him individually.)
"Emilia Pérez" received the most nominations this year with 13, which included best picture, best director, best writing and several acting nods. Karla Sofía Gascón entered Oscar history when she became the first transgender woman to earn a nomination in any acting category when she was nominated for best actress for her portrayal of the film's title character. Her Oscar campaign was, however, tainted by scandal after socially reviled posts she made on social media were brought into the open. The best actress award went, however, to Mikey Madison, who portrayed the title character in "Anora."
Zoe Saldaña — the first Dominican-American to take home an Oscar — took home best supporting actress, one of only two awards for "Emilia Pérez" Sunday night.
"Wicked," the film adaptation of the popular Broadway musical, and "The Brutalist" both entered the evening with 10 nominations each, and were also vying for best picture, best director and a plethora of acting nominations.

"Anora" swept the top honors at Sunday night's 2025 Oscars, earning a total of five awards, such as best picture and best director, at the 97th Academy Awards.
Sean Baker, the director, editor, writer and co-producer of "Anora," took home four Oscars at Sunday's ceremony, matching Walt Disney's record for the most Academy Awards an individual has won in one year. Baker was notable for taking all four awards for the same film, whereas Disney won for four different films at the 1954 ceremony. (Bong Joon-Ho won four awards at the 2020 event, but best international feature technically went to South Korea, not him personally.)
"Emilia Pérez" received the highest number of nods this year at 13, including best picture, best director, best writing and several acting nominations. Karla Sofía Gascón created Oscar history when she became the first trans woman to be nominated in any acting category when she was nominated for a best actress award for her portrayal of the film's title character. Her Oscar campaign was, however, tainted by controversy after offending posts she wrote on social media emerged. Best actress went to Mikey Madison, who played the title character in "Anora."
Zoe Saldaña — the first Dominican-American to take home an Oscar — took home best supporting actress, one of only two awards for "Emilia Pérez" on Sunday evening.
"Wicked," the film adaptation of the popular Broadway musical, and "The Brutalist" both entered the evening with 10 nominations each, and were also vying for best picture, best director and a plethora of acting nominations.
Adrien Brody took home his second best actor Oscar for playing architect László Tóth in "The Brutalist." Brody won his first Oscar at the age of 29 for 2002's "The Pianist" and was the youngest actor to ever receive the award. Timothée Chalamet was also included in the best actor category for playing the legendary folk singer Bob Dylan in "A Complete Unknown," and had been eyeing Brody's record to be broken. Also in contention in the category were Ralph Fiennes, who appeared in "Conclave," Colman Domingo, and Sebastian Stan, who might have been the first individual to ever win best actor for portraying the incumbent U.S. president had he taken the award home.
Past "Late Night" and "The Tonight Show" host Conan O'Brien directed this year's ceremony. Two-time Emmy host, this was O'Brien's inaugural stint as master of ceremonies for the Academy Awards.
